"Jealous," Charles blurted out, his reflexes getting the better of him. Emilia's face dropped, as did her jaw, her cheeks flushing when he started to laugh. "You," he half-cackled, trying to get the words out.

Emilia's chest puffed in embarrassment. "How dare you laugh?!" Emilia squawked, slapping at his arm, which curled around his torso defensively as he tried to feign innocence.

"I ... I'm not."

The words stung, they sounded so close to a confession. But even Charles could understand. She depended on him for so much. It was only natural for her to be fearful of losing him and the sense of security he provided. The companionship. To have all of that be ripped away so abruptly ... He knew it must have been equally terrifying.

"I swear to you, Emilia. I shall be by your side for as long as you wish it."

Blowing the candle out before placing it back on the vanity, Charles raked his hand through his hair, smoothing it against the back of his head as he approached the unusually silent Duchess.

"You're rather quiet this evening ..." Charles warily noted, stopping at the foot of the bed.

The only response he heard, if you could call it one, was the sound of her scooting herself back towards the stack of pillows at the head of her bed. And while the seemingly bold forwardness of the young Duchess enthralled him, the silence was too distracting to let go. Frowning, he crawled onto the bed and over to her, eyes not yet adjusted to the new darkness of the room.

"Emilia? Are you alright?"

She hesitated to respond. Instead, she chose to speak with her actions. Reaching forward, she felt around until finding his tunic, which, per usual, was tucked away in his trousers.

"Emilia?" he questioned again, increasingly confusion mounting. It wasn't until he felt her tug that it clicked. Was she ... initiating?
