The Princess & The Possessed - Prologue

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

Hello and welcome to another rewrite! This one features my old epic modern fantasy, Saphora, and my glimpse of a paranormal romance idea called Possessed.

Saphora, our main character, is a princess. And well, there's a bit of possession going on, in more ways than one. And thus, The Princess & The Possessed was born. The fact that it goes so nicely with my The Duchess & The Damned title was just the cherry on top. 🍒

Things To Keep In Mind

  • This story is in an ongoing draft state. This means that (minor) updates to posts may occur at any time, as needed. Major updates will appear in highlighted text, in addition to having a blog post explaining why.

    • The final versions of these stories will be published and available for purchase when completed. Thank you for your patience!

The Princess & The Possessed - Prologue

As the newest addition to the throne's lineage, Saphora’s mixed heritage to many, was the sign of a new era - one that valued the strength of bonds over the sanction of bloodlines. To others, it was her definitively royal blood that made theirs boil.

Of all the bloodlines the throne could have chosen to bring into the new era, it chose a human’s - a people whose counts of both territorial and genetic encroaching throughout the realms was already all too known. What's more, it was argued that, despite their tenacity and communal drive for innovation, humans were among the least capable in the realm in terms of physical might and arcane prowess.

Among those who shared this narrowing sentiment was the princess' elder brother, Ceasar. The first-born, pureblood son of the late King Cyrus Crowe. Ceasar, however cautiously displayed, was on the side of genetic origins remaining intact - their highly coveted bloodline, especially.

There were some whose blood carried an arcane essence -- the ability to fly or wield the elements for example. Among few others, the ability to manipulate one's own anatomical structure was thought to be one of the powers stemmed from the Gods and Goddesses of creation themselves.

It was a power that could possess uncanny levels of both horror and wholeness, all solely, terrifyingly, dependent on its wielder. It was a power that when honed deliberately, could overtake anything from charging cavalries to contempt courtrooms. It had served the Crowes well for over a century, from their humble beginnings of nomadic heroics to the more regarded acts of leadership in times of communal and territorial crisis.

But when their family found themselves governing over what had quickly grown into a kingdom worth rivalling, they faced said rivalry most from their own kin. Challenges for the throne surged among Mirages, demanding an increasingly secretive attention to their athletic, academic, and especially arcane practices in order to secure their reign.

Now, after over a century of maintaining power over blood and borders, their reign is threatened by the death of their first King, and the following birth of the throne’s first halfling heir.

But there were just as many of course, if not more, who would see Saphora's life celebrated - the rest of her family thankfully among them. It is tonight, in-fact, that the kingdom's finest have gathered to do just that.

Only, this princess' season would be the first not just for her, but for the new era - which meant that Saphora would be able to choose from all eligible suitors - not just the pureblood Mirage, who had up until now, been going as far as fighting for rank amongst themselves for the mere hope of royal consideration. It was without question that Saphora's decision, whether made out of passion or preservation, would be a one of historical significance.

Mirage (Origin)

Mirages are basically my version of shapeshifters. They can morph into any living thing they have seen. The more a Mirage studies/attunes to the subject they are trying to imitate, the closer the likeness.
